Why a two stage coil?

All coils are matched to their performance at full cooling capacity and all systems are designed to this balance point. However, the two speed units have a different requirement. The compressor operates at two different speeds. This creates a need to look at the two different balance points of each system.

When the compressor runs in low speed, the motor is doing 1 the normal work. The fan speed is also reduced to match performance at a lower speed. The standard coil does not reduce in size to match the new system balance. This does not cause a problem in most parts of the country, but in the Gulf Coast area, the problem with this imbalance is the coil does not take out enough humidity with a full size coil when the compressor is in low speed. There are ways to somewhat circumvent the problem, but nothing will give better performance than a properly matched coil design that adjusts with the compressor speed. Due to this fact, we design our own coils to match this condition. This significantly reduces the possibility that humidity will be a problem in any two-speed application.
